ASDEC WRITING PROGRAM
Grades 10-12, July 5 – July 15 From 10:00-12:00 at ASDEC
Good writing is hard work. For students with learning differences, writing is one of the last skills to be mastered. Writing requires planning, organization, sustained effort, and knowledge of grammar and conventions. High school teachers often assume that students are familiar with the process and therefore may not directly teach writing. Many students need a second chance to master these skills before transitioning to college.
This intensive workshop will help students learn to:
-
Create complex and strong sentences
-
Link sentences together to form a well-constructed paragraph
-
Transition between paragraphs
-
Write paragraphs that support a thesis
-
Develop hooks to engage the reader’s interest
- Pre-plan extended writing tasks to maximize time and effort
This course offers a multisensory approach to writing at the secondary level. Great emphasis will be placed on persuasive writing, such as the “5 paragraph” essay, the personal statement, and the college admission essay. The instructors are Certified Academic Language Therapists who have many years of teaching experience helping students use the incremental process to improve sentences, paragraphs, and multi-paragraph essays. Students will learn to write with confidence and skill.
ASDEC will offer an additional week July 18 - 22. Students will learn the binder approach to developing a research paper. This third week is open only to students completing the two week program.
Cost for two-week Program: $450
Cost for Three week Program: $675
