K-Reading Kickstart Program

The Atlantic Seaboard Dyslexia Education Center (ASDEC) is pleased to present   K-Reading Kickstart Program, developed by Mona Iyer, AMS, CALT, CDT.  Ms. Iyer is an early childhood reading specialist with over 25 years teaching highly successful strategies for reading, writing, handwriting, and spelling.

K-Reading Kickstart integrates foundational Orton-Gillingham instructional methods with highly effective Montessori strategies for multi-sensory learning.  The objective of this program is to provide a strong foundation in reading, writing and comprehension to young learners. Using evidence-based screeners, teachers will learn how to group students according to their learning needs.

K-Reading Kickstart delivers a  prescriptive approach to reading and writing  i.e. when a lesson is taught, the curriculum allows grouping of students according to their abilities and progress, and provides time to repeat lessons as required.  This helps student groups to move at a pace that is appropriate for them.  The program provides learning modules in the key areas of phonemic awareness, alphabet skills, phonics, reading, and spelling to help the planning of detailed lessons for the entire year.  The learning modules also help design flexibility into the lessons to cater to the specialized needs of students as appropriate.

Teachers participating in the three-day workshop will receive lesson plans, teacher re-producible masters, and a starter kit of manipulatives.

K-Reading Kickstart instructors will be available to monitor teacher learning and program implementation for up to six months following the training.
