ASDEC MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER PROGRAM
Grades 6-8, July 5-22, 2011 9:00-1:30

Small group instruction in reading, writing, spelling, study skills, handwriting, and mathematics. ASDEC master teachers demonstrate advanced strategies for decoding, word attack, word recognition, and fluency. Instruction in writing includes grammar and syntax, and literary analysis. Learning strategies and study skills instruction is focused on mastery of content subjects, and employs structured procedures that significantly improve comprehension and memory. Math instruction uses research-based multisensory methods including manipulatives, mnemonics, and structured procedures to promote memory and assure accuracy. 

Who should Attend?
Students who currently are struggling in school and require special accommodations as specified in an IEP or some other educational plan.

Outcomes:
Pre-tests and posts tests administered in past summer programs reveal significant gains for participants with many students advancing 1 full school year in math and language subjects. 

Courses

Overview of Phonics: Required of all Students not Currently Enrolled in Academic Therapy
 Syllable Types, Syllable Division, Spelling Rules and Generalizations
Students currently enrolled in Academic Therapy are also welcome

Study Skills
 Students learn strategies, techniques and structured procedures for comprehension and for mastering content subjects.  Instruction focuses on: time management, organization, memory training, vocabulary development, abstracting from text, webbing, outlining, summarizing, grammar, and writing. As a new feature of the summer program, teachers will introduce software and open source technology tools to assist students with a range of learning skills.

Multisensory Math Math 
Focus is on the underlying concepts of secondary school math, including a review of concepts and applications to support algebra. Students learn structured procedures for the following: fraction concepts and operations, multiplication & division facts, least common multiple, common multiple and greatest common factor, solving basic equations, integers, exponents, graphing on the coordinate plane and an introduction to functions.

    Costs
    $1,700.00  

    A 50% deposit is due upon acceptance, with the balance due by May 1st.  Please do not send any tuition payments until your student has been accepted.

    Faculty

    Patti Edison, R.N., C.A.T.
    Ms. Edison has worked as a Certified Academic Therapist since 1994 and has served as ASDEC's Clinical Coordinator of Intern Training Program, Director of the Summer Program for Dyslexic Adolescents, Intern Supervisor, and Master Teacher.  Ms. Edison has taught in the ASDEC summer program since 2000.  A past presenter at the annual International Dyslexia Conferences, Ms. Edison worked as a Critical Care Registered Nurse prior to joining the ASDEC team.
     
    Joy Jacques, R.N., C.A.T.
    Ms. Jacques, Certified Academic Therapist, has been working in the field of academic therapy since 2002.  She has taught in the ASDEC summer program since 2003.  Her previous career was Critical Care R.N.  Ms. Jacques serves ASDEC as a Supervisor and Master Teacher.
     
    Marilyn Zecher, M.A., CALT
    Ms Zecher is a former classroom and demonstration teacher in an Orton-Gillingham based public school program. She holds a BA in education and a BA and MA in English.  In 2004, Ms. Zecher received her certification as an Academic Therapist specializing in multisensory mathematics and study skills. She helped to develop ASDEC’s Multisensory Mathematics program that apply Orton-Gillingham instructional techniques to the teaching on mathematics.  Ms. Zecher is a presenter at at both IDA and LDA national conferences and has trained both public and private school teachers as well as academic therapists in multisensory mathematics instructional techniques, handwriting, multisensory study skills and educational strategies for the gifted and talented dyslexic student.
