ASDEC MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
Grades 7-10, July 6 – July 16
Small group instruction for non-IEP students who benefit from ASDEC’s multisensory teaching. Students learn advanced techniques to boost their writing and math performance. ASDEC senior faculty will teach structured procedures for phonics, vocabulary development, advanced strategies for writing essays, abstracting from text, taking notes and attacking textbooks. In math, students learn core concepts of algebra and geometry, while improving basic skills and reviewing important concepts and operations.
Who should Attend?
Students currently struggling in reading, writing and math who function at or just below grade level.
Outcomes:
Students learn effective study skills while improving reading, writing and math skills through structured multisensory procedures that improve their working memory and comprehension. These strategies have been proven to enhance students’ academic confidence and therefore to improve their overall performance.
Courses:
Overview of Phonics
Students learn advanced strategies for decoding, word attack, word
recognition, and fluency as well as syllable types, syllable division,
spelling rules and generalizations all designed to improve
comprehension.
Written Language
Students learn the process approach for writing sentences, expanded
sentences and paragraphs. They learn a variety of multisensory
strategies to organize what they write before committing words to a
page. As a new feature of the summer program, teachers will introduce
software and open source technology tools that assist students with a
range of independent learning skills.
Multisensory Math
Multisensory Math Focus is on the language and concepts of mathematics
fundamental to understanding numberness and mathematical operations.
Students will learn order of operations, greatest common factor (GCF),
least common multiple (LCM), solving basic equations, graphing on the
coordinate plane.

$800.00
A 50% deposit is due upon acceptance, with the balance due by June 1st. Please do not send any tuition payments until your student has been accepted.
Faculty
Patti Edison, R.N., C.A.T.
Ms. Edison has worked as a Certified Academic Therapist since 1994 and has served as ASDEC's Clinical Coordinator of Intern Training Program, Director of the ASDEC Summer Program, Intern Supervisor, and Master Teacher. Ms. Edison has worked in the ASDEC summer program since 2000.
Merida Hurkett, M.S., CALT
Ms. Hurkett is currently a Clinical Director at ASDEC in addition to her responsibilities as a supervisor and Master Teacher. Ms. Hurkett has a MS in Special Education and received her certification as an Academic Therapist in 2005 and is a member of the Academic Language Therapy Association. Ms. Hurkett has worked in the summer program since 2005.
Marilyn Zecher, M.A., CALT
Ms Zecher is a former classroom and demonstration teacher in an Orton-Gillingham based public school program. She holds a BA in education and a BA and MA in English. In 2004, Ms. Zecher received her certification as an Academic Therapist specializing in multisensory mathematics and study skills. She helped to develop ASDEC’s Multisensory Mathematics program and has taught in the ASDEC summer program since 2004.
