MULTISENSORY MATH I
30 HOURS
MSM I is a hands-on, research based course offering an approach to mathematics instruction which is applicable to all students but essential for many. Mathematical concepts are introduced using concrete manipulatives and developed through both the representational and abstract levels, an approach endorsed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. MSM I covers the instructional methodology, the research and rationale for the multisensory approach as well as foundation concepts and skills in mathematics instruction: numeracy, counting, place value, operations, fractions and strategies for solidifying math facts as well as games for reinforcement. The curriculum addresses the enormous impact of language and processing in mathematical performance and explores the ways in which various learning differences/ disabilities affect students in this field. Implications for and links to higher level math are addressed as are remedial instructional strategies.
This program expands on and applies to mathematics multisensory strategies used in successful Orton-Gillingham language programs originally designed for students who benefit from alternative learning techniques. It is not wedded to any specific curriculum or textbook series. It is however, applicable and adaptable to any math program and it offers strategies for helping those students who fail to gain a solid foundation and continually fall further behind their peers. Participants gain practice at using manipulatives for individual, class room or small group settings and leave with a resource notebook and reference manual as well as various manipulatives they develop and construct during class activities.
This course has been offered nationally to both private and public school professionals. The ASDEC course content and approach have also been featured in presentations at both IDA and LDA national conferences.
